Orphaned at a young age, Ressan Ahvaar was raised by his aunt. She is the head of a noble house and was childless until she legally adopted her nephew. As the oldest child of a noble house, Ressan had more options available to him with regards to the Riedran compulsory national service and chose to enter into Diplomatic Corps.

Rising swiftly due to his innate charm and cunning, Ressan was dispatched with a unit of Riedran soldiers to Khorvaire in order to make an offer of aid to the Q’barran settlers. Once there he offered to go on patrols with them as a gesture of good will to both the troops who had been assigned with him and to the Newthrone government. He also volunteered to guide some representatives of the Dragonmarked Houses to the great volcano of Haka’torvhak! This proved to be unusual enough that he requested, and received, approval for a vacation tour of Khorvaire.
